Barry Named to TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s soccer freshman Catherine Barry earned her first career weekly honor as a member of TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Team of the Week, the publication announced Tuesday.

Barry scored a pair of goals in Carolina’s home opening win over Missouri. The multi-goal performance was just the second time for a Gamecock dating back to 2017. Barry’s brace is also the first time a freshman scored two goals in one match since Luciana Zullo did back in 2017 against Mississippi State.

“It was really exciting scoring my first goals, it is something you dream of doing,” Barry said. “I was really excited to help the team get a victory. To have my family there when I did it just made it even better. I’m so grateful for these opportunities and to help my team win.”

“Cat just made it happen for us. For her that was nice to be rewarded and the presence she had up top for us. It is always nice to get your first goal as a freshman. And then for her to get two is pretty amazing.”

Barry’s goals both came in hustle situations. Her first coming off a redirect off a Missouri goalkeeper clearance in the first half to tie the match at one and the other in the second half to give the Gamecocks a 2-1 lead that ended up being the game-winning goal. Barry has started both matches for the Gamecocks this season and leads the team with six shots with three on goal in 122 minutes of action.

South Carolina (1-1-0, 1-1-0 SEC) will play Kentucky (0-2-0, 0-2-0 SEC) at Stone Stadium on Oct. 4. The match can be seen on SEC Network at 1 p.m. The Gamecocks are looking for their fifth-straight win over the Wildcats.
