Gamecocks Battle Tennessee in Volunteer Showdown Day 2

KNOXVILLE, TENN. – South Carolina men’s tennis junior Daniel Rodrigues and sophomore Connor Thomson picked up two wins in their three matches at the Volunteer Showdown on Saturday. Facing Tennessee in seven doubles and nine singles matches, the Gamecocks combined for six victories on the day.
 
Three of the nine singles matches went to three sets, including Thomson who picked up his victory over Martim Prata by shaking off a 2-6 loss in the first set. The Gamecock sophomore powered home a 6-0 second set and closed with a solid 6-4 victory.
 
Day three of the round-robin tournament will start at 9 a.m. Sunday for the final day of fall competition for the Gamecocks.
 
Gamecock Notables

• South Carolina and Tennessee played two rounds of doubles on Saturday with Tennessee winning three of the four played in the morning session and the Gamecocks claiming two of the three in the afternoon matches.
• Freshman Toby Samuel picked up his second win of the weekend with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win over fifth-year senior Joel Gamerov.
• Junior Daniel Rodrigues returned to his dominant form, yielding just four games in his win over fifth-year senior Giles Hussey.
• With their wins today, Rodrigues and Thomson are tied for the team lead with five singles victories this fall.
