Men's Tennis Closes Fall Season with Solid End to Volunteer Showdown

KNOXVILLE, TENN. – South Carolina men’s tennis wrapped up its fall season with seven wins over SEC rival Mississippi State in the final day of the Volunteer Showdown. The Gamecocks picked up two doubles victories and claimed five of the seven singles contests as well.
 
The pair of doubles victories came at the expense of Mississippi State duos that finished last season ranked No. 43 and No. 75 in the nation. Junior Daniel Rodrigues posted a dominant 6-3, 6-0 win over Florian Broska, who closed 2019-20 ranked 89th in the nation. Only freshman Toby Samuel put together a more efficient victory with his 6-0, 6-1 win over second-year freshman Davide Torta.
 
 
Gamecock Notables

  • Over the three-day tournament, six of South Carolina’s eight doubles victories came from the teams of Raphael Lambling/Phillip Jordan and Daniel Rodrigues/Connor Thomson.
  • The Gamecocks went 14-12 in singles, including a perfect 3-0 weekend from freshman Toby Samuel.
  • Rodrigues closed the fall with a team-high six singles wins across three tournaments. Four of his wins came against players who ended the 2019-20 season with a national ranking, including two who were ranked in the top 11.
  • Four other Gamecocks posted five singles wins this fall, including Samuel and sophomore Connor Thomson.
  • Lambling/Jordan went 8-1 in doubles for the fall season, playing at the top of the Gamecocks’ doubles lineup. Rodrigues/Thomson finished the fall with a 6-3 mark.
