Roussin-Bouchard and Schmelzel Start Strong at U.S. Women’s Open
HOUSTON, Texas – South Carolina sophomore Pauline Roussin-Bouchard and alumnae Sarah Schmelzel got off to strong starts at the U.S. Women’s Open on Thursday, finishing the opening rounds tied for 12th and 24th place respectively, at the Champions Golf Club.
Roussin-Bouchard notched her first birdie of the day on the second hole and finished the front nine with a 1-under 35. On the back nine she responded to a bogey on 11 with back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 before finishing the day with a bogey on 18 to tally a 1-under 70 on the Cypress Creek course. At 12th place Roussin-Bouchard is tied for second among all amateurs in the tournament.

Schmelzel rebounded after a bogey on the third hole to shoot even through the rest of the first round before sinking a birdie on 18 to finish with an even par 71 on the day, also on the Cypress Creek course.
Roussin-Bouchard gets her second round underway on Friday at 9:11 a.m. on the Jack Rabbit course, while Schmelzel tees off at 9:44 a.m. on the Jack Rabbit course as well. Friday’s broadcast runs from 10 a.m. to Noon on Peacock, and picks up from 3-6 p.m. on Golf Channel.
