Gamecocks Lead after Two at Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic
ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 1 South Carolina women’s golf team battled through windy and cold conditions to shoot a 1-under 287 and move into the lead at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Couse on Saturday.
Senior Ana Pelaez blazed the path for the team with her 3-under 69, moving into second place on the individual leaderboard. Pelaez finished her front nine with three birdies in a row and capped off the back nine with back-to-back birdies to put her two strokes back from the lead heading into the final round.
Fellow senior Lois Kaye Go bounced back from her rough opening round to card a 2-under 70 on Saturday. Go locked in after notching bogeys on two of her first five holes, shooting par or better on the remaining 13 holes. The senior got back to even on the day with a birdie on 15 and tallied birdies on holes 17 and 18 to get back under par and help the team surge to the top of the leaderboard.
Sophomore Pauline Roussin-Bouchard closed her round strong with birdies on 15 and 18 to finish at 2-over 74. Freshman Paula Kirner also finished the day at 2-over.
“Really proud of how the team played today,” head coach Kalen Anderson said after the round. “We faced very tough conditions, very windy and cold to start the day on a difficult front nine. We just hung in there and played really steady and got through the difficult part of the golf course. We stayed patient and finished strong on the par 5s. We showed a lot of resilience and we’ll need to do that again tomorrow with more windy conditions. It’ll be a tough grouping, but we’re looking forward to having a good day tomorrow.”
The Gamecocks tee off in the final round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday.
