Beach Volleyball Duo Earn National Recognition
Greer and Schnieder are the fifth pair in program history to be honored by the Top Flight program
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its annual Top Flight awards Tuesday afternoon, and Gamecocks Morgyn Greer and Carly Schnieder made the national list. The award recognizes pairs who have a win percentage of .750 or higher at one position over the course of a season. Greer and Schnieder went 23-5 (.821) in the fifth position of the lineup for the nationally ranked Gamecocks, making them the fifth pair in program history to be Top Flight honorees.
The two veterans left their names all over the program record book in 2021, starting with the overall 23-5 record that boasts the third-highest single-season total by a Gamecock pair and a win percentage that ranks second for a single season. Of their 23 wins, 13 came against conference rivals, which is a single-season record for a pair since joining the CCSA in 2016. Greer and Schnieder boasted top wins over pairs from No. 2 Florida State, No. 12 FAU, No. 13 FIU and No. 19 Georgia State. Their eight wins against ranked opponents is the fifth-highest total by any Gamecock pair in history.
Both Greer and Schnieder close out their careers at South Carolina on high notes. For Greer, her two-year career ends with a 28-11 overall record following her four-year indoor career at Florida. This is Schnieder’s second Top Flight award, she previously won in 2018 with teammate Julia Mannisto. She joins Katie Smith (2018, 2019) as the program’s only multiple award winners.
Individually, Schnieder’s career has been one of the best in program history. The Cincinnati, Ohio native’s 92 career wins ranks third in program history and she ranks second in career conference wins (42), career wins against ranked opponents (29) and career starts (139). Not only was her overall win total impressive, but her career win percentage of .662 is good for the fourth-highest by any Gamecock with 50 or more career starts.
South Carolina ended the 2021 season with a 23-9 overall record and the No. 16 spot in the national polls. The 23 wins are the second-most in a season in program history, and the team’s 12 wins in conference duals are a record.
