Darling Wins Girls Amateur Championship

Incoming freshman trailed for just three holes in five matches

YORK, U.K. — Incoming freshman Hannah Darling won The R&A’s Girls Amateur Championship on Sunday at Fulford Golf Club. She defeated Ireland’s Beth Coutler 2-up in the final. The historic tournament, founded in 1919, is one of the top amateur events in the world in women’s golf.
 
Darling finished second in stroke play earlier in the week to earn the No. 2 seed for match play. She rolled in here first three matches, winning 5&4 (round of 32), 6&5 (round of 16) and 9&8 (quarterfinals). Darling took down England’s Olivia Williams on Saturday in the semifinals 3&2. She was dominate from start to finish at the tournament, trailing for just three holes in her five matches.
 
Darling, a Scotland native, was recently named to the GB&I Curtis Cup team. She’s had an exceptional summer that features winning the St. Rule Trophy, a runner-up finish at the Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open Championship, and quarterfinal appearances in both The Women’s Amateur Championship and Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship.
 
The No. 27 player in the most recent World Amateur Golf Rankings, Darling will be on campus next week as classes begin shortly and the Gamecocks open preparations for the team’s fall season.
