Gamecocks Remain Undefeated in SEC Play with 2-1 Victory Over Kentucky

LEXINGTON, KY. – Remi Swartz’s first goal as a Gamecock was a pivotal one, as her goal in the 78th minute turned out to be the game-winner as the South Carolina women’s soccer team defeated Kentucky 2-1 Sunday afternoon (Sept. 26). The win lifts the Gamecocks to 8-2 on the season and 3-0 in SEC play.

The first 28 minutes of the match were quiet, as neither team had a shot on goal. Then, in the 29th minute, the Gamecocks broke through. On a corner kick, Lauren Chang served the ball into the box and found Jyllissa Harris, who leaped over several UK defenders to head home her third goal of the season. The assist was Chang’s fifth of the season.

Just over two minutes later the Wildcats would find a bit of luck when Swartz was called for a foul in the box, giving Kentucky a penalty kick. Jordyn Rhodes converted on the PK to tie the score.

That’s the way the score would stand until the 78th minute. Catherine Barry took a throw in from the left sideline and sent a ball through the box where it found Swartz just inside the top of the 18. She would bury it home off her right foot, just under the crossbar and past the outstretched arm of the Kentucky goalkeeper. The goal was the second of her career and her first as a Gamecock. The assist was also Barry’s first of the season.

In goal, Heather Hinz made two saves, both of which were spectacular diving plays, the second of which came in the 73rd minute to keep the game tied. The Wildcats sent a through ball to the far post, for what looked like a wide open shot on goal, but Hinz made a running diving save to keep Kentucky from taking the lead.

For the afternoon, both sides attempted 10 shots, with South Carolina holding a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.

The Gamecocks return to Stone Stadium as they host 11th ranked Auburn Friday, October 1, at 7 p.m.
