Gamecocks Drop Road Match at LSU
BATON ROUGE, La. – The South Carolina women’s soccer team dropped a tough road match Thursday night, October 21, as the Gamecocks fell to LSU 4-0. The Gamecocks are now 9-5-1 on the season and 4-3-1 in SEC play.
Despite the score, the Gamecocks and Tigers each finished the match with 13 total shots, while LSU held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. South Carolina tied a season-high with 12 corner kicks.
The Gamecocks had the early advantage, attempting two shots in the first eight minutes. In the 18th minute, an LSU played was fouled in the box, as the Tigers were able to convert on the ensuing penalty kick. LSU added a goal in the 29th minute off a deflection and another in the 37th minute from outside the 18-yard box.
South Carolina had a couple of chances in the opening 45 minutes, putting three shots on goal.
Trailing 3-0 to start the second half, the Gamecock offense came out looking to attack, as Luciana Zullo put a shot on target just over a minute into the half. South Carolina added another on goal in the 52nd minute by Ryan Gareis.
The Tigers added a goal in the 82nd minute for the final margin.
The Gamecocks now turn to their attention to their final home match of the season, when they host Alabama Sunday, October 24, at 1 p.m. Prior to the match South Carolina will celebrate Senior Day when they honor Claire Griffiths and Sutton Jones.
