Feagin Named to Katrina McClain Award Watch List

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina freshman Sania Feagin is one of 20 candidates named to the 2022 Katrina McClain Award Watch List, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced today. In its fifth year, the annual award recognizes the top power forward in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball

Feagin joined the Gamecocks fresh off helping the U.S. to a gold medal in the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup. Ranked the No. 1 forward and No. 4 overall player in the Class of 2021, Feagin was a Naismith, WBCA and McDonald’s All-American after a standout career at Forest Park High School in Ellenwood, Ga. The 2020 Gatorade Georgia Player of the Year was a four-time All-State selection by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, including first-team recognition as a junior and senior. She helped Forest Park to a 6A State Championship in 2020 and a 5A runner-up finish in 2021. In a career that saw her amass over 1,800 points and 1,300 rebounds, Feagin turned in 18.9 points, 10.3 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game as a senior.

A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates, and college basketball fans are encouraged to participate in the Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. In late January, the watch list of 20 players will be narrowed to 10 and then to just five in late February. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Ms. McClain and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee where the winner will be selected.

The winner of the 2022 Katrina McClain Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Women’s Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award, the Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award and the Lisa Leslie Center Award, in addition to the Men’s Starting Five.

The Preseason No. 1 Gamecocks will host Benedict in an exhibition game at Colonial Life Arena on Mon., Nov. 1, before officially opening the season at AP Preseason No. 5 NC State.
