SEC Announces Winter Academic Honor Roll

83 Gamecock student-athletes made the list, the second-highest total in the conference

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 2021 Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll was announced on Wednesday by commissioner Greg Sankey. South Carolina had 83 student-athletes across five sports make the list, the second-highest total in the conference. It was just five honorees from matching the athletics department’s record of 88, set last school year.

In total, 788 SEC student-athletes earned a place on the honor roll, which includes the sports of basketball, equestrian, gymnastics and swimming & diving. It is based on grades from the 2020 Spring, Summer and Fall terms.

The South Carolina Athletics Department as a whole concluded the Fall 2020 semester with a departmental grade point average (GPA) of 3.299. It marks the department’s fifth-highest GPA in history and the 28th-consecutive semester with a departmental GPA above 3.0. Fourteen of 18 teams earned a GPA of 3.0 or better during the fall semester, with winter honor roll member women’s basketball (3.333) and earning the program’s fourth-highest team GPA on record.

The department also saw 91 student-athletes make the President’s List for earning a 4.0, 208 student-athletes make the Dean’s List (3.5) and 436 more to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (3.0).

Any student-athlete who participates in a Southeastern Conference championship sport or a student-athlete who participates in a sport listed on his/her institution’s NCAA Sports Sponsorship Form is eligible for nomination to the Academic Honor Roll. The following criteria will be followed: (1) A student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution. (2) If a student-athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll. (3) Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletics scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letter winner), and non-scholarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons. (4) Prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution. (5) The student-athlete must have been a member of a varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
