Hahn Scores Game Winner as Gamecock Defense Earns Shutout

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Eveleen Hahn scored the game-winner in the 70th minute for the South Carolina women’s soccer team, as the Gamecocks defeated Vanderbilt 1-0 Thursday night (Sept. 23) inside Stone Stadium. The Gamecocks improve to 7-2 on the season and 2-0 in SEC play.

“It’s important to start SEC play off on the right foot and we’ve done that these last two matches,” head coach Shelley Smith said. “We did well to limit them. We stifled their opportunities in the end. The whole team played well and played together.”

The Gamecocks defense did not allow Vanderbilt to attempt a single shot in the first half and held the Commodores to just two for the match. Their first shot attempt of the game came in the 67th minute.

South Carolina attempted three shots in the first half with Ryan Gareis’ attempt in the 24th minute being punched away by the Vandy keeper at the last second.

Early in the second half the Gamecocks put two of shots on target in less than a minute, as they looked to pressure the Commodore defense.

South Carolina was able to breakthrough in the 70th minute, when Camryn Dixon went up the right sideline where she played a beautiful ball into the box. Hahn corralled the ball with her chest, before flicking it with her right foot high over the goalies outstretched arm. For Hahn, it was her team-leading fourth goal of the season, while the assist was the first of her career for Dixon.

“Credit to Cam for an amazing ball,” Hahn said of the goal. “Ranya (Swartz) was in front of me and she did a really good job of shielding the front defender. It kind of just bounced straight to me and it was just a tap in.”

On the night, the Gamecocks out-shot Vanderbilt 9-2 and held a 4-1 shot on goal advantage.

South Carolina heads back out on the road as the Gamecocks travel to Kentucky for a 2 p.m. kickoff on Sunday, September 26.
