Gamecocks Fall to Presbyterian

Carolina surrendered a goal in the 78th minute to drop match against Blue Hose

COLUMBIA—The South Carolina men’s soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Presbyterian on Tuesday night inside of Stone Stadium.

“Obviously another tough loss in front of another great crowd,” said head coach Tony Annan. “I think we are a team in transition. We’re transitioning to a new coach and new style of play. We will get it right for about 10-15 minutes and then we slip out of it.

“I’m proud of the lads. I’m proud of how they worked and what they gave.”

The deciding goal came in the 78th minute for the Blue Hose (2-1-1). Mamadu Bah made a run up the left side of Carolina’s defense and received a pass from Ben Kaindu. Bah took a touch and fired with his right foot to the far post to score his second goal of the match. Bah also opened the scoring in the 36th minute.

Carolina (1-3-0) had two more attempts on net in the final 13 minutes, but both were saved and Presbyterian held on for the victory.

The Gamecocks were down at halftime, but struck early in the second half to equalize. Parker League put his head on a feed from Peter Clement off a corner kick and put it in the net on the far side in the 49th minute.

Carolina had chances aplenty in the first 45 minutes, but were unable to convert on any of them. All-in-all, the Gamecocks put five shots on goal and had nine corner kicks throughout the match.

The Gamecocks return to action Saturday for their conference opener against Coastal Carolina. It will be First Responders Night at Stone Stadium. Military and first responders will receive free entry with proper identification.
