Gamecocks Set to Honor Legends Against LSU on Feb. 19
Team will celebrate 50th anniversary of '71 ACC and '97 SEC Championships
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Athletics and the men’s basketball team are set to recognize program greats on Saturday, Feb. 19 when the team host LSU at 3:30 p.m. (ET).
As part of Legends Weekend, the Gamecocks will honor the anniversaries of two special teams, the 50th anniversary of the 1971 ACC Championship team, which was moved to this year due to limited capacity at Colonial Life Arena last season, and the 25th anniversary of the 1997 SEC Championship team.
Under the direction of head coach Frank McGuire, the 1970-71 team finished with a 20-4 record in the regular season, made the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance and finished the season ranked No. 6 in the nation. In what was their last ACC game, the team captured the ACC Championship over North Carolina.
Under the direction of head coach Eddie Fogler, the 1996-1997 team captured the program’s only regular season SEC Championship after posting a 15-1 record in conference play. The team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and posted an overall record of 24-8.
Men’s basketball alumni will host an autograph session on the concourse with fans prior to tipoff vs. the Tigers. All legends will be recognized on the court at halftime of the game.
