No. 4 Gamecocks Rally Again, Take Second at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate

South Carolina shot a field best score of 283 (-1) in the final round and was only team under par

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — No. 4 South Carolina finished emphatically at the 10th Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Wednesday, shooting a field-best score of 283 (-1) to finish second. The Gamecocks were the only team in the field to post a red number in the final round.

“Incredible resiliency coming from last to a runner-up finish – I’m really proud of this group,” said head coach Kalen Anderson. “This is who we are and this is the Gamecock golf we play. We had a really off day the first day. We played really committed golf. We really finished strong going 1-under in the last 36 holes. What a platform for women’s golf. This is something that’s really special to my heart.”
After rising nine spots to seventh yesterday, Carolina rose five spots today. The team’s 1-under score the final 36 holes was the best in the field by a wide margin.
Junior Mathilde Claisse paced the team again today with a 1-under 70 that featured four birdies. She T-6th for her third career top-10 and second this season.
A trio of players shot even par in freshmen Louise Rydqvist, Hannah Darling and junior transfer Justine Fournand. Rydqvist made three birdies and finished T-20th at 6-over. Darling mad a birdie and an eagle as she T-27th at 7-over. Fournand had a pair of red numbers on her card the final five holes of her round as she rallied on the back nine to finish T-41st at 10-over. Darling and Fournand were two of just three players in the 90-women field to have an eagle on their scorecard during the tournament.
Senior Tai Anudit shot 72 (+1) and tied for the team lead the final round with four birdies. Sophomore Paula Kirner shot 75 (+4) the final round playing as an individual.
No. 5 Wake Forest swept the team and individual titles for the second consecutive year. The Demon Deacons shot 290 (+6) in the final round to post a 54-hole total of 861 (+9) to win by nine over the Gamecocks. Wake Forest’s Carolina Lopez-Chacarra shot 69 (-2) for the second consecutive day to win by two over Texas’ Bohyun Park. Lopez-Charcarra posted a 54-hole total of 209 (-4). She had a stretch on the front nine today where she made five birdies in six holes.
The Demon Deacons jumped into the lead yesterday by six shots over No. 13 Arizona State after shooting the round of the tournament with a 4-under 280. It was the lowest second round team score in tournament history, surpassing Florida State in 2019.
Scoring was challenging all week as just five players in the field shot par or better.
This year’s DRI made history becoming the first all-women regular season collegiate event to be aired by the Golf Channel. The network carried live coverage every day from 2:30-5:30 p.m. (ET), airing reruns as well for a grand total of 21 hours of coverage.
