Gamecocks Close Weekend Tournament at TCU

The team is 4-4 and hosts its first home tournament next weekend

FORT WORTH, TEXAS. – South Carolina lost a pair of duals to ranked opponents Saturday morning in its final games of the Horned Frog Challenge at TCU. The Gamecocks lost 4-1 to No. 19 Georgia State in the morning and 5-0 to No. 3 Florida State in a game immediately following that. After two weekends on the road, the team holds a 4-4 overall record.
Against the Panthers, South Carolina had a chance to grab momentum early but split the first wave of matches. Kaeli Crews and Sophie Bengoechea won at the fifth pairing, 21-15, 15-21, 15-13, but Georgia State countered with a 19-21, 21-18, 15-10 win at the fours. Georgia State controlled the top three pairings, winning each in straight sets.
In the finale against the Seminoles, the Gamecocks again had quality chances early but weren’t able to capitalize. Sophie Manson and Hannah Mackenhausen won their first set on court four but dropped a three-set decision, Crews and Bengoechea came close to going three in their match at the fives but lost 21-16, 24-22. South Carolina was able to get on the board behind a strong results from the No. 2 pair of Abby Carroll and Lauren Wilcock, a 21-16, 21-18 sweep, but Florida State claimed a 4-1 win.
Up next, the team will finally play in its home sand when it hosts the Gamecock Grand Slam March 11-12. Day one pits the Gamecocks against Pepperdine and LSU, the Saturday finale has matches against Louisiana Monroe and Mercer. South Carolina plays at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. both days.
