South Carolina Takes Down No. 11 FAU to Begin Weekend Tournament

The Gamecocks play two more duals on Saturday and two on Sunday

GULF SHORES, ALA. – South Carolina battled the elements and No. 11 Florida Atlantic on Friday, the first day of its March To May Tournament on the beach of Gulf Shores, Ala. Following hours of weather delays, the Gamecocks (8-5) ended the day with a 3-2 victory over the Owls (7-5).

Running all six pairs at one time in order to catch the last light of the day, the dual moved fast. The Gamecocks struck first with a 21-15, 21-9 win by Kaeli Crews and Hannah Mackenhausen on court three, but FAU countered with sweeps on the first and fifth courts to jump ahead 2-1. Peyton Gray and Abby Carroll drew the team score even again with a 21-18, 21-19 win on court four, then all eyes turned to the final active court where Jordan Smith and Lauren Wilcock were in a third set to decide the dual. The Gamecocks came out with a tight 15-13 decision to lock in their third win of the season over a ranked opponent.
