Gamecocks Suffer Loss to Georgia in SEC Consolation
Auburn, Ala. – South Carolina fell to No. 5 Georgia in a 12-7 outcome in the consolation round of the SEC Championship. For the second day in a row, junior Jordan Allen took the Most Outstanding Performer honor in fences.
“The end result is not what we had hoped for nor was it what we expected with how well practice has gone over the spring,” said head coach Boo Major. “We definitely made some mental mistakes but I know our student athletes gave it their all on both days of competition.”
On the flat, South Carolina earned a point with a solid ride from Trinity Hammerschmidt. She scored a 218.5 to prevent Georgia from sweeping the event.
In the horsemanship, the Gamecocks earned the final two points in the event from two freshmen. Kendie Herlocker rode to a 216.5 on Max to secure one point while Tierney Horton and Hannah took the next with a 223.5. Horton’s score was the second highest of the day in the event and helped South Carolina to three points headed into the half.
The Gamecocks set the tone in fences with Allen who opened the event. Her score of 275 tied a championship record for the highest score in the event and marked her third consecutive M.O.P. this season. Soon after, freshman Sophie Mitchell earned her second career championship point with a 245 on Neto. With a tie of 257 from Hammerschmidt, South Carolina and Georgia each took two points in the event.
With only reining left to go, Georgia led 9-7. South Carolina took the first point with Emilia Reutimann‘s 207.5 on Goose. The Bulldogs grabbed the next two points but could not top Emma Lane‘s 215 on Dually. At the close of the meet, South Carolina earned seven points to Georgia’s 12.
