Rodrigues Earns Second Consecutive SEC Player of the Week Honors
Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis junior Daniel Rodrigues was named SEC Player of the Week the conference announced Wednesday. This is his second consecutive honor and third honor of the season.
Rodrigues had a perfect week in singles, defeating No. 82 Rafa Izquierdo Luque of NC State in straight sets and No. 107 Alex Reco of Arkansas in a three-set comeback thriller. Rodrigues’ win over Reco marked his 100th career singles win and made him just the tenth player in program history to achieve this milestone.
The Funchal, Portugal, native is on a seven-match winning streak with all seven coming over ranked opponents, five of which were in the top-35 – Nos. 18, 19, 21, 25, and 35. Rodrigues is now 16-2 from the No. 1 singles position and has a 12-2 record over ranked oponents in dual match action.
The junior also recorded a doubles win over the weekend alongside partner Connor Thomson. The duo took down Reco/Nico Rousset of Arkansas in a dominant 6-2 decision. Their win made Rodrigues 15-3 in doubles from the No. 1 position with a 5-2 record over ranked opponents.
Rodrigues and the Gamecocks will be back in action at home this weekend, taking on Vanderbilt Friday at 5 p.m. and Kentucky Sunday at noon. Rodrigues is slated to take on two more ranked opponents and looks to keep his streak alive. Admission to both matches is free and open to the public.
