Rodrigues Earns No. 2 Overall Seed in NCAA Individual Championships

He is joined by sophomore Connor Thomson in a bid for the NCAA Doubles Championship.

Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis junior Daniel Rodrigues has earned an at-large big to the NCAA Singles Championships where he enters as the No. 2 overall seed. He is joined by sophomore Connor Thomson in a bid for the NCAA Doubles Championship.
 
The 64-player singles event and 32-team doubles event will be held May 23-28 in Champaign, Ill. following the conclusion of the team chapionships.
 
Rodrigues is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation by the ITA and recently earned First Team All-SEC honors for his 11-1 SEC dual season. The junior is 24-4 overall on the season and 21-3 in dual action from the No. 1 position. He has been well-tested for the upcoming tournament, facing 21 ranked opponents over the year and earning victories over 18 of them. Rodrigues ended the regular season on a 12-match ranked winning streak with eight of his victories over top-50 opponents.
 
The Funchal, Portgal, native started the regular season at No. 29 and has worked his way up to his current position of No. 2. This is his second selection to the individual championship. He advanced last season to the title match and finished the tournament as singles runner-up.
 
In doubles, Rodrigues and Thomson are ranked No. 17 and have a 17-7 overall record. They are 16-4 from the No. 1 position and hold six wins over ranked opponents, including two wins in the top-10.
 
Rodrigues will be the 61st Gamecock entry all-time in the singles draw. South Carolina has been represented in the singles bracket in each of the last six championships.
 
In doubles, Rodrigues and Thomson are the 18th selection in program history. This is their second consecutive appearance in the tournament together.
 
The 2022 singles draw includes 17 SEC selections including all four of the top four seeds and seven of the 16 seeds overall. In doubles, seven SEC duos were selected, earning three of the eight seeds.
