Women's Soccer Finishes Season Opener with a Draw Against No. 1 FSU
COLUMBIA, SC – After 90 minutes of action in Stone Stadium, No. 12 South Carolina and No. 1 Florida State ended things in a 0-0 draw in front of a crowd of nearly 5,000. The tie marks the first against a No. 1 ranked team in program history.
The Seminoles got things started early, with two shots coming from Jenna Nighswonger in the ninth and 10th minute of play, each of which contributing to Florida State’s seven corners within the game. The Gamecocks answered back with their first shot of the game at the 28th minute from Cat Barry, followed by another within the minute from freshman Shae O’Rourke that was on target but saved by goalkeeper Cristina Roque. Florida State took four more chances, but the teams remained scoreless through the first half.
In the second half, senior Camryn Dixon started off the action for the Gamecocks with a shot out top in the 47th minute. The Seminoles then threatened with a series of 10 shots throughout the half, but three saves from Gamecocks goalkeeper Heather Hinz kept things even. Hinz was dominant in front of the net, racking up six saves on the night, double her opponent.
Four additional freshmen saw time on the pitch, with Dru Drake, Shay Montgomery, and Micah Bryant each making appearances, including a start from Gracie Falla.
