Hoole Upsets No. 23 to Advance at Fall Nationals

San Diego, Calif.  – South Carolina men’s tennis sophomore Casey Hoole earned his largest career upset to advance at the ITA Fall National Championships in San Diego, Calif., on Wednesday. Hoole took down No. 23 Alexander Hoogmartens of UCLA in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.

Hoole, who joined the Gamecocks in January, at no point looked like the underdog and was able to breeze past the Bruin, giving up just three games in the first set and blanking his opponent in the second.

The Brisbane, Australia, native is on an eight-match win streak with six of those wins coming in straight sets. Prior to the day’s competition, Hoole had two ranked wins in his career over Nos. 60 and 80. His win over No. 23 is the largest of his career and makes him 3-0 over ranked opponents on the season.

Hoole will face No. 105 Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc of Florida State in the next round at a time to be announced later. Conut-Chauvinc is the tournament’s No. 2 seed and earned his spot into the draw as the runner-up of the Southeast Regional.

Play will continue at Fall Championships on Thursday with the Rounds of 16. Draws and results are available on the tournament webpage. Live scoring will be provided here and live streaming will be provided here.
