Gamecocks Break Department Record for SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll Members

South Carolina's 120 honorees leads the conference for the 14th time since 2006

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The SEC’s Fall Academic Honor Roll was announced on Tuesday by commissioner Greg Sankey. South Carolina’s 120 student-athletes recognized on the list leads the conference for the 14th time since 2006. It is also the fourth fall semester in a row with triple-digit honorees and is the highest single-year total for the fall in the department’s history.

In total, 1,203 SEC student-athletes made the list. The 2021 Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll includes the sports of cross country, football, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. It is based on grades from the 2021 Spring, Summer and Fall terms.

South Carolina’s student-athletes reached a departmental grade point average above 3.0 for the 30th-straight semester, concluding the Fall 2021 term with a mark of 3.245 and 16 of 18 teams posting a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Women’s soccer (3.733) earned the highest team GPA in the fall semester and their fourth-highest team GPA on record. The department named 67 student-athletes to the President’s List for earning a 4.0, 166 student-athletes to the Dean’s List (3.5) and 396 to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (3.0).

“The term ‘Student-Athletes’ has special meaning at the University of South Carolina,” Athletics Director Ray Tanner said when the fall grades were announced. “The drive to excel on the playing fields and courts are only matched by the determination to stand out in the classroom and reach the ultimate goal of graduation.”

Any student-athlete who participates in a Southeastern Conference championship sport or a student-athlete who participates in a sport listed on his/her institution’s NCAA Sports Sponsorship Form is eligible for nomination to the Academic Honor Roll. The following criteria will be followed: (1) A student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution. (2) If a student-athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll. (3) Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletics scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letter winner), and non-scholarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons. (4) Prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution. (5) The student-athlete must have been a member of a varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
