Gamecocks Have Successful Final Day of Spring Invite

Coral Gables, Fla. – South Carolina Men’s Tennis wrapped up play at the Miami Spring Invite with another strong showing, coming away with two ranked doubles wins and four singles wins.

Graduate Jake Beasley and junior James Story earned the highest ranked win of the day for the Gamecocks, taking down No. 19 Trent Bryde and Ethan Quinn of Georgia with a dominant 8-4 performance.

Graduate Raphael Lambling and sophomore Casey Hoole also picked up a ranked doubles win with theirs coming over No. 55 Blake Croyer and Britton Johnston.

In singles, junior Connor Thomson picked up his second ranked win of the weekend. He took out No. 73 Dan Martin of Miami in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Thomson went a perfect 3-0 in singles through the invite.

The Gamecock’s pair of graduates had another perfect day with Lambling and Beasley both adding another straight-sets win to their respective resumes. Lambling and Beasley each went 3-0 in both singles and doubles on the weekend and each Gamecock picked up one ranked singles win and one ranked doubles win in the weekend.

Story earned the final singles win of the day for the Gamecocks, completing an impressive comeback for his victory. Story lost the first set 1-6 and fought a tough battle to force the second set to a tiebreak to stay alive in the match. The junior came out on top of a slightly extended tiebreak 8-6 to even the match and earn a third set. In the final set, Story earned a timely break to take it 6-4 for the win.

Overall through the Miami Spring Invite, South Carolina racked up 11 singles wins and seven doubles win. Four of the six participating members of the team earned at least one ranked singles win.

The Gamecocks will see their first dual action of the season on Jan. 20 when they take on Charlotte and the Citadel in Columbia. The match versus Charlotte will begin at 9 a.m. while the match versus the Citadel will begin at noon.
