Gamecocks Look to Defend Title at Palmetto Intercollegiate Monday

South Carolina Athletics

Carolina won the event last season for the fifth time in program history by 10 shots

AIKEN, S.C. – South Carolina is back in action on the course Monday at the Palmetto Intercollegiate. The Gamecocks are seeking to defend their title from last season after running away with a 10-shot victory over Virginia.

“We always enjoy playing historic Palmetto Golf Club and we’re looking forward to defending the title,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “The team has been working hard after a solid showing in Puerto Rico, and I think they’re ready to get back into competition again this week.”

Carolina has won the event a total of five times with four trophies coming under the direction of McDonald (2015, 2016, 2019 and 2022). All-American Ryan Hall won the event last season by five shots for his fourth career win (T-2nd most all-time at South Carolina) with a 54-hole total of 200 (-10).

Junior Rafe Reynolds will look for another strong performance as he is fresh off a career-best T-2nd finish at the Puerto Classic (Feb. 13-15) that earned him SEC Golfer of the Week honors for the first time in his career. Reynolds shot 210 (E) at last year’s Palmetto Intercollegiate en route to a T-4th finish. Fifth-year senior Evans Lewis, transfer Lansdon Robbins, sophomore Nathan Franks and freshman Zach Adams join him in the lineup this week. Lewis T-27th (218, +8) and Franks T-41st (221, +11) at last year’s Palmetto Intercollegiate.

Carolina is joined in the field this week by a pair of Power Five schools in Virginia Tech and Wisconsin. The Gamecocks will be paired with the Badgers and Hokies for the first two rounds Monday. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat. It’s a shotgun start for the field at 8 a.m. (ET).
