First career player of the week honor for sophomore from Roebuck, S.C.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Nathan Franks was named SEC Golfer of the Week the league office announced on Wednesday. It’s the first career weekly player of the week honor for the Roebuck, S.C., native.

Franks recorded his second-straight top-five finish at the General Hackler Championship yesterday. He shot 207 (-9) to finish T-4th at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club, posting scores of 68-69-70 on the par-72 layout. He led the team with 12 birdies over 54 holes. Franks finished T-2nd in the 84-man field in pars (39) and also T-3rd in the field in par-3 scoring average (-1, 2.92).

He is playing some of the best golf of his young career, recording six-straight rounds of par or better (five red numbers) in tournament play for the Gamecocks.

Franks earned runner-up medalist at the Palmetto Intercollegiate last week thanks to a career-low, 54-hole score of 206 (-4). He shot 67 (-3) in the second round. Franks’ performance at historic Palmetto Golf Club helped the team to its first win of the season and the program’s sixth all-time victory at the event.

It’s the second time a Gamecock golfer has earned SEC Golfer of the Week honors this season. Junior Rafe Reynolds earned the recognition after a runner-up medalist finish at the Puerto Rico Classic (Feb. 13-15).

South Carolina will be back in action soon as it host the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate (March 26-28) starting next Sunday. The Gamecocks will look to defend their title at the event, which was shared with ETSU as co-champs last season.
