Sophomore Zach Adams led the way at American Dunes with a T-9th finish, his third career top-10 finish
GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – South Carolina finished fourth in the season-opening Folds of Honor Collegiate on Wednesday. The Gamecocks shot 294 (+10) in the final round led by a pair of newcomers in transfer Frankie Harris and freshman Bo Carpenter.
Scoring was tough again with windy and firm condtions after a 2 hour-plus weather delay this morning. Notre Dame, who defeated Michigan State by a shot after coming back from fifth place, was the only team under par today with a team score of 282 (-2). Just six players total in the 90-man field fired a red number in round three. Kansas’ Cecil Belisle won with a 54-hole total of 212 (-1). He was the only player in the field under par.
“It was a good start to the season and proud of the guys for fighting hard,” head coach Bill McDonald said. “We gave up a lot of shots the past two rounds, but hopefully we learned some good lessons that will help us going forward.”
Harris shot 71 (E) with a trio of birdies on the back nine, including back-to-back circles on his scorecard at holes 17 and 18. Carpenter was bogey free on the front and made birdie at the par-4 17th hole to shoot 72 (+1). The duo each finished T-24th at 5-over for the tournament in their Gamecock debuts.
Sophomore Zach Adams led the team this week with his T-9th finish. After a difficult front nine in which he shot 41 (+6), the Charleston, S.C. native rallied on the back shooting 34 (-2). He finished his round with three-straight birdies on 16, 17 and 18.
Senior Rafe Reynolds was the final counting score today with a 76 (+5). Junior Nathan Franks shot 77 (+6) and did not record a birdie in round three after solid play the first two days.
The Gamecocks are off the rest of the month before returning to action Sept. 25-27 at the SEC Fall Preview. The event, taking place at Country Club of Birmingham, will feature all 14 SEC teams. There will be 54-hole stroke play with matches on the final day to determine a champion.
