Barry Brace: Cat Nabs Two on Senior Night in Win Over Furman

COLUMBIA, SC – The No. 10 South Carolina women’s soccer team (6-1-1) defeated the Furman Paladins (3-3-1) 2-0 on Senior Night, capping off its non-conference slate for the 2023 season.

Senior Cat Barry moved her way up in the record books, taking the No. 3 spot for career game-winners at 15, and settling into No. 4 for career goals at 30. The senior also tied her career-high of 10 shots in a game.

With the victory, head coach Shelley Smith officially notched her 300th career win at the helm of the program, and was the 200th win for South Carolina women’s soccer at Stone Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first half ended scoreless between the two teams, but it didn’t stop the Gamecocks from putting massive pressure on the Paladins, putting up 18 shots (six on goal) in the first 45 minutes
  • South Carolina turned up the heat in the second half, with senior Cat Barry knocking in the game-winner from fellow senior Corinna Zullo less than two minutes in for her fifth goal of the season
  • The Gamecocks put up three more shots with two on target over the next 10 minutes, and found themselves up 2-0 in the 58th minute after Barry grabbed a brace from sneaking a shot past a Furman defender and keeper Addison Corn to give South Carolina its sixth clean sheet of the season
  • South Carolina finished with 32 shots (14 on goal) to the Paladins’ four
  • Sophomore keeper Christina Tsaousis played all 45 minutes of the second half and tallied her first career save
