Gamecocks End Battle Against Kentucky in 0-0 Draw

LEXINGTON, KY – The No. 7 South Carolina Gamecocks (7-1-2, 1-0-1) faced their first SEC road test on Thursday, ultimately leaving with a 0-0 draw against the Kentucky Wildcats (6-0-4, 0-0-2).

The game was an all-out defensive battle on both sides, with Kentucky taking the slight offensive edge taking three shots with two on goal in the first half. Fifth-year keeper Heather Hinz saved them both.

South Carolina attempted to turn up the heat in the second half putting pressure on Kentucky, but fell victim to turnovers. The back line came in stronger than ever however, with the Wildcats putting up seven more shots on the board in the final 45 but being unable to find the back of the net. Hinz managed to save four of the seven. The Gamecocks took their first corner of the game in the 80th minute in an effort to put a goal on the board, but were unable to make the connection.

Kentucky finished with a 10-0 shot advantage against South Carolina, the first time the Gamecocks have ended a game shotless since 2015 (vs. Alabama, 11/4). Despite the draw, South Carolina has now tallied seven clean sheets on the season, marking the 26th of Hinz’s career. Her six saves on the night also bring her to 208 of her career, moving her to the No. 3 spot in the record books.

The Gamecocks will head back home to Columbia, taking on Tennessee at 7:00 p.m. in Stone Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 24.
