Gamecocks Fall to Spartans

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team (2-5-1) dropped its non-conference match to USC Upstate (3-4-1) Tuesday night (Sept. 26) 4-0.

The Gamecocks held a 12-to-11 advantage in total shots, while the Spartans led 6-4 in shots on goal. Carolina also led in corner kicks 12-4 and maintained a 57-to-43 advantage in time of possession.

Upstate took the lead early, scoring off a corner kick in the 2nd minute. The Gamecocks had to play a man down for the final 80 minutes of the match when Jack Burgess was sent off on a red card in the 10th minute.

Despite playing a man down, Carolina out-shot the Spartans 8-5 in the first half. The Gamecocks had a couple of scoring chances in the 13th minute, including an opportunity on a penalty kick, but were unable to convert.

USC Upstate added to its lead in the 23rd minute, before scoring in the 56th and 70th minutes.

South Carolina returns to Sun Belt play September 30 for a 7 p.m. kickoff at James Madison.
