No. 8 Gamecocks Prepped For Dual Meet
COLUMBIA, SC – The No. 8 South Carolina Equestrian team (1-0) is set for another top-10 matchup this week, taking on No. 10 UT Martin (0-0) at One Wood Farm on Friday, Sept. 29 at 10:00 a.m. The Jumping Seat squad will then take on Lynchburg (0-0) at 2:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Gamecocks picked up their first win of the season over No. 9 UC Davis, 11-8. South Carolina led 7-3 at the break and pulled off the victory in addition to sweeping the MOP honors for the day.
Natalie Jayne took the MOP title for both fences and flat, earning an 86 and 92 respectively. Junior Tierney Horton received the honor for her ride in horsemanship on Chubby, defeating her Aggie opponent 72.5-65. Chloe Stephenson rounded out the MOPs for the day in reining, earning a 70.5 on Sparky to her opponent’s 62.5.
SCOUTING THE SKY HAWKS
Friday’s meeting with UT-Martin will be the 10th all-time. The Gamecocks currently hold the series at 9-0, and last met with the Skyhawks on the road taking home a 10-9 win in 2022. Then freshman Natalie Jayne sealed her name in the records book during the meet, tallying a 93 on Tag. The 93 was the second-highest score on the flat in program history, and the first 93 to be scored since 2008 (Megan Massaro vs. Baylor, Oct. 25) For her performance, Jayne earned her third MOP honor of the season. Kendalyn Herlocker also received an MOP honor for her ride on Hank, winning 70.5-65.
The meet will be the first of the season for UT Martin.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
South Carolina will face Lynchburg in a jumping seat only meet, taking on the Hornets for just the third time in program history. The Gamecocks have won both of the previous meets, and all have been at home in Blythewood.
The meet should prove to be a great battle, as Lynchburg is coming off a National Championship for single-discipline teams back in April of this year. This will also be the first meet for the Hornets’ 2023-24 season.
