Kosgei Earns Third SEC Weekly Honor of the Season

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Oct. 3, 2023) – Another week, another weekly SEC honor for South Carolina Cross Country runner Judy Kosgei. The Kenya freshman distance runner was named SEC Women’s Freshman Runner of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.

After becoming the first Carolina repeat SEC Women’s Runner of the Week recipient two weeks ago, Kosgei makes history yet again. The freshman phenom is the first Gamecock Cross Country runner to win three SEC weekly awards in both a single season and in a collegiate career.

Kosgei competed at the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa. over the weekend, coming away with her third consecutive win and third straight program record. This time, Kosgei put her name atop the South Carolina 6K leaderboard, running 19:54.9. Her time broke a program record set in 2019 by a full 44 seconds, besting Heather Stone’s previous record of 20:38.8. Kosgei fended off a surge by Boston’s Hannah Prosser, coming away with her third win of the season in just her third race.

South Carolina is back in action on Friday at 5 p.m. when the Gamecocks take part in the Royals Challenge in Charlotte, N.C.
