Play suspended as Carolina sits tied with No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 Wake Forest at 13-under on the back nine of round two
DALLAS, Texas – No. 6 South Carolina is T-2nd with No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 Wake Forest late in the second round of the Stephens Cup as play was suspended due to darkness on Monday evening. All five players for the Gamecocks are in the top-20 on the individual leaderboard.
Carolina took the 18-hole lead by a shot thanks to an opening round 279 (-9) earlier in the day on Monday. The Gamecocks were led by 3-under 69s from junior All-American Hannah Darling and freshman Maylis Lamoure.
Sophomore Mia Sandtorv Lussand shot 70 (-2) and junior All-American Lousie Rydqvist shot 71 (-1) to round out the team’s counting scores the opening 18 holes.
Rydqvist and sits 2-under in round two with seven holes to go. Freshman Vairana Heck is also 2-under in round two with six holes remaining. She went birdie-birdie at holes one and two to get her back nine started in round two. Sandtorv Lussand is also in red figures at 1-under with five holes to go. Darling and Lamoure are 1-over with four and three holes remaining, respectively.
It’s a bunched leaderboard as the race for the top two will be on in the final round of stroke play tomorrow at Trinity Forest Golf Club. The top two schools will play in the title match on Wednesday. Carolina was in the championship match in 2021 at the inaugural Stephens Cup, taking second to LSU.
Texas has the 36-hole lead posting a 12-under 276 in round two. They are the only team in the clubhouse currently on the women’s side.
Play will resume tomorrow morning with the final round taking place shortly after round two concludes.
