Gamecocks Continue to Make Mark on Regional Championships

Cary, N.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis completed its third day of action at the Carolina Regional Championships on Sunday with two more rounds of singles and one round of doubles.

Junior Casey Hoole, the reigning ITA Carolina Region Champion, made more strides towards defending his title, winning both of his singles matches on the day to make his way into the semifinals.

In the round of 16, No. 59 Hoole defeated North Carolina State’s Luca Staeheli in straight sets before going on to take down Wake Forest’s Matthew Thomson in the quarterfinals, also in straight sets.

Hoole will face No. 96 Filippo Moroni of Wake Forest in the semifinals on Monday beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Also in the singles bracket, freshman Sean Daryabeigi recorded the first ranked win of his career in the Round of 16. The Delray Beach, Fla., native took down No. 106 Anuj Watane in a three-set comeback win. After Watane claimed the first set 6-2, Daryabeigi battled back to take the remaining two sets with a pair of late breaks, 7-5, 7-5. Daryebegi then advanced to the quarterfinals where he fell to Wake Forest’s Suresh Dhakshineswar.

In the doubles round of 16, Da Silva and partner Jelani Sarr advanced to the quarterfinals after taking down Charlotte’s Matias Iturbe and Ivan Dreycopp in a close match 8-7(2).

Da Silva and Sarr will face the nation’s No. 10 pair of Andrew Zhang and Michael Heller on Monday at noon in the quarterfinals.

South Carolina’s other pair of Hoole and Carter Morgan fell to Joseph Wayand and Martin Borisiouk of NC State in the round of 16. 

Singles semifinals and doubles quarterfinals at the Carolina Regional Championships will take place on Monday. Draws and results will be available on the tournament webpage.
