Gamecocks Drop Regular Season Finale to No. 4 Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team (5-8-3, 3-4-2) dropped its final match of the regular season 2-0 to No. 4 Marshall (14-2, 7-2) Tuesday night (Oct. 31).

On the night, the Thundering Herd out-shot the Gamecocks 16-to-6 and 6-to-4 in shots on goal, and led 12-9 in corner kicks. South Carolina goalkeeper Ben Alexander finished with four saves.

Despite the final score, the Gamecocks led the attacking advantage in the first half, leading 3-1 in shots on goal. Jordan Illian twice nearly put Carolina in the lead in the opening half.

Marshall scored its first goal off a free kick in the 51st minute. They added to their lead in the 69th minute on a ball that just slipped through Alexander’s grasp.

The Gamecocks will head to No. 1 UCF to play the Knights for the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament November 5 at 7 p.m.
