Cardoso Grabs SEC and USBWA Weekly Honors
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball senior center Kamilla Cardoso was named SEC co-Player of the Week honors from the SEC and one of five Ann Meyers-Drysdale National Players of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). Cardoso was the Gamecocks’ top scorer last week, including an SEC career-best 23 points against Vanderbilt.
In South Carolina’s comeback win at #9/9 LSU, Cardoso stormed into the second half with six third-quarter points, including a putback that sparked a 6-0 run to get the Gamecocks within one. In the fourth, her inside bucket gave South Carolina its first lead since the game’s opening minutes, and her kickout assist to Bree Hall’s 3-pointer at 1;11 gave the Gamecocks the lead for good.
Against Vanderbilt, the first and third quarters were all Cardoso with eight and 13 points, respectively, en route to her 23 for the game. Seven of her third-quarter points came in a 14-2 run after the Commodores had cut the lead to eight early in the period.
In SEC awards, Cardoso shared Player of the Week honors with Mississippi State’s Jerkaila Jordan. From the USBWA, the other four selections for Ann Meyers-Drysdale National Players of the Week were Caitlin Clark (Iowa), McKenna Marisa (Penn State), JJ Quinerly (West Virginia) and Skylar Vann (Oklahoma).
South Carolina is back in action on Thu., Feb. 1, at Auburn for an 8 p.m. ET tipoff. The Gamecocks then open a three-game homestand at Colonial Life Arena on Sun., Feb. 4, against Ole Miss.
