Gamecocks Host Top-10 Matchup Thursday

Columbia, S.C. – No. 4 South Carolina men’s tennis continues its non-conference schedule on Thursday with a match against No. 9 Wake Forest at 3:00 p.m. at the Carolina Indoor Tennis Center located at 523 Superior St.

Free parking is available in the tennis center parking lot with overflow parking available at Camp BowWow. Admission to the match is free and open to the public. Those not in attendance can view live stats here with live streaming here.

Gamecock Notables

  • South Carolina is ranked No. 4 in the latest ITA Coaches Top-25 poll. The team has been ranked inside the top-5 for the entirety of the 2024 dual season.
  • The Gamecocks are off to a 3-1 start on the season with an upset of then-No. 1 Virginia in Charlottesville to start the season but most recently suffering a narrow loss to NC State at home.
  • In the ITA Singles rankings, senior Toby Samuel made his first appearance of the season, coming in at No. 50. Freshman Jelani Sarr also made his first career appearance in the rankings at No. 76.
  • James Story and Casey Hoole are the first Gamecock pair to appear in the ITA Doubles rankings this season, coming in at No. 60. The duo is 1-2 together this season with their lone win coming over then-No. 13 Joseph Wayand and Martin Borisiouk.
  • Samuel is a perfect 3-0 at the No. 1 position this season with ranked wins over Nos. 22 and 120.
  • Sarr is 14-8 overall this season and 2-2 in dual play. The freshman has been holding down the No. 3 position for South Carolina and has five ranked wins on his resume with the highest over then-No. 17 Kenta Miyoshi.

Scouting the Demon Deacons

  • Wake Forest is ranked No. 9 in the latest ITA Coaches Top-25 poll – their highest ranking of the season.
  • The Demon Deacon are 6-2 overall this season with ranked wins over then-No. 20 Florida and then-No. 9 Columbia. Their two losses have come on the road at then-No. 6 Tennessee and No. 1 Ohio State.
  • Wake Forest has three individuals in the ITA singles rankings – No. 23 Filippo Moroni, No. 49 DK Suresh, and No. 106 Franco Capalbo.
  • Wake Forest is also home to the No. 7 ranked doubles pair in Suresh and Holden Koons.
  • Moroni and Suresh have split time at the top of the lineup with Moroni 2-3 at No. 1 and Suresh 1-1 at the same position.
  • Suresh and Koons have been the team’s top doubles pair, going a perfect 5-0 at the top of the doubles lineup.

Series History

  • South Carolina leads the all-time series against Wake Forest 30-18 and has won the last two matchups.
  • The two programs first faced in May of 1954 in Winston-Salem with the Demon Deacons earning a narrow 5-4 victory.
  • South Carolina holds the longest win streak of the series with eight wins between 1996-2003.
  • Under head coach Josh Goffi, South Carolina is 3-6 against Wake Forest.
  • The two teams are no strangers to meeting each other while ranked inside the top-15. In 2023 No. 8 South Carolina defeated No. 9 Wake Forest 5-2 and in 2022 No. 13 South Carolina defeated No. 6 Wake Forest, also by a 5-2 margin.
