No. 4 Gamecocks Fall in Tough Battle to No. 1 TCU
FORT WORTH, TX – The No. 4 South Carolina Equestrian team (6-4, 1-3) went neck and neck with the No. 1 TCU Frogs (9-0) on Friday, ultimately falling 12-6.
The meet opened up with Fences, where Natalie Jayne grabbed the first point for the Gamecocks with an 85-81 win on Billy. Alexia Aureliano then defeated Jordyn Scelsa 86-79 on Fats, but the Frogs took the remaining three points.
TCU continued their streak, opening up reining with two wins. Mattie McNeill then answered back, taking her point on Alfie 68.5-67.5 over Mattie Dukes. Senior Emma Lane tied with her TCU opponent 70.5-70.5 on Britney, but Chloe VanStone evened the score in the event after taking down Jessica McAllister 68.5-68 to make things 5-4 at the half.
South Carolina continued the fight, tying the overall score 5-5 to start the second half after Mary Hunter Millet took her point 74-72 on Stryker over Ashleigh Scully. Natalie Jayne then followed suit, bringing in a 78 on Cheers to defeat Laurel Smith’s 75 and put the Gamecocks on top 6-5. For her ride, Jayne received her third MOP honor of the season in the event. The Frogs then took the remaining three points to make things 8-6 heading into Horsemanship.
The Gamecocks gave a valiant effort, with newcomer Jenna Berghorst tying her career high of 76 on Dewey, but the Frogs swept the event 5-0 to earn the 12-6 win.
