Gamecocks Wrap Non-Conference With Pair of Sweeps

Columbia, S.C. – No. 16 South Carolina men’s tennis claimed a pair of 7-0 sweeps over the Citadel on Wednesday afternoon to improve to 6-5 on the season.

During the first match, Lucas Andrade da Silva and James Story were first to record a win, giving a dominant 6-1 performance at the second spot in the lineup. The doubles point was clinched by the freshman duo of Sean Daryabeigi and Jelani Sarr who won their match 6-3.

In singles, No. 71 Toby Samuel recorded a double bagel, defeating Hayden Shoemake 6-0, 6-0 at the top of the lineup. Fellow senior Carter Morgan followed Samuel with an impressive victory of his own, winning his match 6-1, 6-0. The match was clinched by da Silva at the No. 4 position where he won 6-1, 6-2.

The Gamecocks won all three remaining matches in straight sets to complete the sweep.

During the second match of the day, da Silva and Story again recorded the first win, also by a 6-1 margin but this time from the top of the lineup. No. 9 Samuel and Casey Hoole clinched the point for the team with a 6-2 win at No. 2 and Sarr and Daryabeigi closed out the days doubles matches with a 6-3 win at No. 3.

The first singles win of the match came from Daryabeigi who played at No. 4 in the lineup for the first time of his career, defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-0. Story followed him with a dominant win of his own, recording it 6-2, 6-0. Da Silva again clinched the match with his win. The sophomore breezed through his match 6-0, 6-3.

Morgan and Sarr both followed with straight set wins while No. 106 Hoole earned the final victory of the day in a three-set comeback.

The Gamecocks will be in action next on Fri., March 1 to start SEC play at home. The team will face No. 25 LSU in the SEC opener at 3:00 p.m. on Friday and will come back to host No. 12 Texas A&M at noon on Sunday.
