No. 5 Gamecocks Sit Fourth After Opening Round of Darius Rucker Intercollegiate

South Carolina Athletics

The team's freshmen French duo of Maylis Lamoure and Vai Heck sit inside the top-10 after each posting red numbers Monday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – No. 5 South Carolina sits fourth at 2-under after an opening round 282 on Monday at Long Cove Club. No. 20 Arizona State has the 18-hole lead in the team race thanks to a 6-under 278 in the morning wave of tee times.

The Gamecocks were led by the team’s freshmen French duo of Maylis Lamoure and Vairana Heck, who both got hot down the stretch to push themselves into the top-10 of the individual leaderboard. Lamoure made birdie on the final two holes to post a 3-under 68 to pace Carolina. She is T-3rd just one shot off the lead. Heck made birdie on 16 and 18 to card an opening 69 (-2). Heck made four birdies on the back nine and Lamoure three. They each carded six red numbers on their scorecards to lead the team.

Junior All-Americans Hannah Darling and Louise Rydqvist were the final counting scores of the day for the Garnet and Black. Darling shot 72 (+1) with four birdies. Rydqvist shot 73 (+2) with the only blemish on her scorecard a double bogey at the par-5 third hole.

Sophomore Mia Sandtorv Lussand is playing as an individual this week and she shot 76 (+5) the opening round today. Senior Sophia Burnett, a Hilton Head native, shot 79 (+6) in her third consecutive start in the lineup.

LSU All-American Ingrid Lindblad and Mississippi State All-American Julia Lopez Ramirez each shot 67 (-4) to sit tied atop the leaderboard on the individual side. Only 20 players in the 89-women field fired a red number the opening 18 holes on the Pete Dye designed course, which always proves a tough test for all competitors.

On the team side, the Sun Devils lead by three with 10 other teams still in the mix at even par or better. Six teams shot 1-under or better in the opening round.
