Cardoso Advances on Wooden Award and Naismith Defensive Watch Lists
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball center Kamilla Cardoso is on the 2024 Women’s National Ballot for the John R. Wooden Award presented by Principal and a semifinalist for 2024 Naismith Defensive Player of the Year.
Cardoso is the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and a First-Team All-SEC selection. She also earned All-America honors from The Athletic earlier this month. South Carolina’s top scorer and rebounder averages14.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Her 2.6 blocks per game are 12th in the nation, and her .584 field goal percentage is 20th. Cardoso is ninth in the nation in player defensive rating (71.8), which ranks her second in the SEC. She has 13 double-doubles on the season and has scored in double figures 24 times in her 28 games played this season.
The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during the early round games. The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the NCAA Elite Eight round. The winner of the 2024 John R. Wooden Award will be presented in Los Angeles in April.
