Gamecocks Grab Third-Straight NCAA Tournament Overall No. 1 Seed

COLUMBIA, S.C. – For the third time in as many seasons, South Carolina women’s basketball earned the NCAA Tournament’s No. 1 overall seed. Making their 12th straight appearance at the event, the Gamecocks are the No. 1 seed in the Albany 1 Region.  They will host first- and second-round games at Colonial Life Arena this weekend.

In the First Round, the Gamecocks (32-0) will play the winner of the Sacred Heart (24-9) / Presbyterian (20-14) game for the No. 16 seed on Friday, Mar. 22. No. 8 seed North Carolina (19-12) and No. 9 seed Michigan State (22-8) will also square off at Colonial Life Arena on Friday. The winner of those two games will meet on Sun., Mar. 24.

South Carolina has been ranked atop both national polls since coming in at No. 6/4 in the preseason polls. The Gamecocks enter the NCAA Tournament undefeated for the second-straight season after claiming their eight SEC Regular-Season and eighth SEC Tournament titles. It marked the sixth time in the last 10 seasons they have swept both titles. South Carolina leads the country with 17 NET top-50 wins, and its seven wins against ranked opponents are second-most in the country.

This is the 20th all-time NCAA Tournament bid for the Gamecocks, who have won two National Championships (2017, 2022) and played in three other Final Fours in the last eight tournaments. South Carolina has played in a total of 13 Sweet 16s and advanced to the Elite Eight seven times. The Gamecocks are 44-17 all-time in the event, including a 36-9 mark under head coach Dawn Staley.

This marks the Gamecocks’ eighth regional No. 1 seed all-time after earning the position in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2022 and 2023. South Carolina advanced to the Final Four as a No. 1 seed in 2015, 2017, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
