Men’s Tennis Claims Pair of Sunday Victories

Columbia, S.C. – No. 16 South Carolina men’s tennis claimed a pair of wins on Sunday with a 4-3 victory over No. 51 Ole Miss and a 4-0 shutout of Furman.

Against Ole Miss, South Carolina claimed the doubles point thanks to a pair of wins at the top of the lineup. At the No. 1 position, No. 19 Toby Samuel and Casey Hoole got back in the win column with a 6-3 victory over No. 65 Nikola Slavic and Lukas Engelhardt.

The point was clinched by James Story and Lucas Andrade da Silva at the No. 2 position where the duo won 7-5 thanks to a late break.

In singles play, the Rebels tied things up with a win from the No. 5 court but South Carolina took the lead back with Sean Daryabeigi and Da Silva claiming wins on courts 4 and 6 respectively.

Ole Miss again tied things up with a pair of wins from Courts 2 and 3 where No. 105 Hoole fell 1-6, 6-7(3) and Story fell 0-6, 4-6, 3-6.

The final match on was between No. 21 Samuel and No. 62 Slavic at the No. 1 court. Slavic claimed the first set 6-4 thanks to a late break but Samuel battled back to take the second set 6-2 to even things up. In the final set, Samuel broke early to lead 3-1 and carried his positive momentum to the end, winning the final set 6-3 to clinch the match.

Against Furman, Daryabeigi and Jelani Sarr claimed a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles just seconds before Story and Da Silva won their match 6-3 at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.

In singles play, the underclassmen led the charge with two freshmen and a sophomore putting all three of South Carolina’s singles points on the board.

Daryabeigi recorded his second singles win of the day in a dominant 6-1, 6-2 showing on Court 3 – the highest the freshman has played in the lineup this season.

Da Silva also won his second singles match of the day in straight sets. The sophomore completed a near shutout over his opponent, winning the match 6-0, 6-1.

The match was clinched by Sarr who also claimed a straight set win – his 7-5, 6-3.

The men’s tennis team will continue SEC action next week, traveling to Athens, Ga., and Knoxville, Tenn., for meetings with the Bulldogs and Volunteers.
