Gamecock Signee Edwards Gatorade National Player of the Year

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s’ basketball signee Joyce Edwards was named the 2023-24 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year, the organization announced today. WNBA All-Star Satou Sabally surprised Edwards with the trophy presentation at Camden High School this morning.

Already the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year in her home state, Edwards is the second Gamecock to claim this national honor and does so following an outstanding senior season that saw her average 31.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 4.5 steals, 4.0 assists and 3.3 blocks. The 6-foot-2 forward led Camden to the Class AAA State Championship and was ranked the No. 2 recruit in the Class of 2024. Edwards is a McDonald’s All-American and earned a spot on the Naismith All-America First Team. On the international stage, she helped the United States win gold at the 2023 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup, where her 12.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks earned her a spot on the All-Star Five.

Off the basketball court, Edwards has been active in the community, volunteering at the Beyond the Court basketball camp and tutoring middle school students at the Jackson Teen Center. Behind strong work in the classroom, she is a member of the National Beta Club and National Honor Society.

Edwards will join the Gamecocks in the 2024-25 season, along with fellow signee Madisen McDaniel (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara). Until then, No. 1/1 South Carolina is set for its NCAA Sweet 16 matchup with No. 14/14 Indiana on Fri., March 29, at 5 p.m. in Albany, N.Y., and on ESPN.
