Verzyl to Compete in U.S. Diving Olympic Trials

Knoxville, Tenn. – The USA Diving Olympic Trials are taking place this week in Knoxville, Tenn., at the Allen Jones Aquatic Center with Gamecock diver Sophie Verzyl battling for a spot in Paris. The Columbia, S.C., native will compete on the 3-meter springboard with her event taking place on Thursday, June 20.

The preliminary round of dives will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the semifinals at 5:00 p.m. Should Verzyl advance to the finals, they will take place on Saturday, June 22 beginning at 7:03 p.m.

Verzyl, who competed in the Garnet & Black during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, elected to redshirt for the 2023-24 season to train full time at RIPFEST Diving in Arcadia, Ind., under head coach John Wingfield.

During her time with RIPFEST, Verzyl has competed internationally in Chengdu, China, at the FISU World University Games where she earned three bronze medals out of the five events of that she competed in, the most of any U.S. competitor across the event.

Recently, Verzyl has competed in the American Cup where she placed fourth on the three-meter and the Canada Cup where she placed seventh in the same event.

Verzyl’s dive sheet for the Olympic Trials features a dive difficulty of 15.50 across her five dives. The 15.50 ties with two other competitors for highest in the event. Her highest difficulty dive is the 5154B that has a difficulty of 3.40.
