Local product from Columbia becomes first player in program history to compete in prestigious development camp
BEAVERTON, Ore. – Rising sophomore standout forward Collin Murray-Boyles accepted an invitation to the 2024 Nike Basketball Academy Aug. 4-9 at Nike World Headquarters in Oregon. He will be the first Gamecock to participate in the prestigious development camp.
The full roster for the invite only camp will be announced after it begins on Sunday. Last year’s college invitees from the SEC included Rob Dillingham (Kentucky), Riley Kugel (Florida), Grant Nelson (Alabama) and D.J. Wagner (Kentucky).
The skills academy, which started in 2015, allows the top high school and college players in the nation the opportunity to learn and train with current and past NBA superstars through a series of on-court workouts, drills, film sessions and 5-on-5 competition. Scouts and executives from across the NBA attend the event.
Murray-Boyles was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team last year after averaging 10.4 points, 5.7 rebounds (led team), 1.8 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.0 steals per game. He scored in double-figures 13 times and led the team with a pair of double-doubles. He also led the team in field goal percentage (59.7%) and dunks (21).
He had a breakout performance in a double-digit home victory over Vanderbilt on Feb. 10 with 31 points on 14-of-17 (82.4%) shooting. He became the first SEC freshman since Bobby Portis of Arkansas in 2014 to record 30 or more points with 13 or more made field goals while shooting above 80 percent. He also joined Gregory “GG” Jackson II (2023) and Bruce Ellington (2010) as the only freshman to record a 30-point game since South Carolina joined the SEC in 1991-92.
The Columbia, S.C., native and former standout at AC Flora led the team to its first SEC Tournament win since 2018 in the second round against Arkansas (March 14). He had 24 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists against the Razorbacks. Murray-Boyles was 11-of-15 (73.3%) from the floor and his 11 made field goals were a new school record in SEC Tournament play.
The 2024 SEC Coach of the Year Lamont Paris and his team will open the season in early November. Season ticket information is available here. Stay tuned to GamecocksOnline.com for the full release of the team’s non-conference schedule followed by the SEC slate.
