Gamecocks Dominate Covered Bridge Open

BOONE, N.C. (Aug. 30, 2024) – South Carolina Cross Country got off to a hot start to open the season, winning the Covered Bridge Open in convincing fashion, scoring 16 points for the title. The Gamecocks were just one point shy of the clean sweep and a perfect score of 15 on the leaderboard.

Teresa Cherotich made her much anticipated debut on Friday morning and turned in a time of 17:16.14 for the sixth fastest 5K race in Gamecock history. Fellow freshman Mary Frances Iseman turned in the second fastest time of the meet and 19th best time in Carolina history after crossing the line at 17:47.47. Sophomore runner Anya Arroyo placed third overall and improved on her personal best after clocking 17:51.46, ranking 22nd all-time.

Three more underclassmen jumped into the Top 50 all-time list, led by freshman Cate Conklin who ran 17:58.9 to finish fourth overall, turning in the 25th best time in program history. Sophomore Emma Torbert was the final score that counted for Carolina, placing sixth overall with a new personal best time of 18:04.85, ranking 36th in Gamecock history. Local freshman Abigail White was the final Top 50 representative after running 18:14.12 to finish 10th overall in the meet and now holds the 45th best time in program history.

The Gamecocks comfortably held off host Appalachian State who finished with 51 points, followed by Mercer who rounded out the top three with 91 points.

South Carolina is back in action in two weeks from today as the Gamecocks will compete in the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C. on Friday, Sept. 14 at 9:15 a.m.
