Cherotich Claims Furman Invitational as Gamecocks Finish Runner-Up

GREENVILLE, S.C. (Sept. 14, 2024) – South Carolina Cross Country concluded the 2024 Furman Invitational with a runner-up finish, scoring 51 points in the first 6K race of the season.

For the second consecutive meet, Teresa Cherotich led the charge for the Garnet & Black, collecting her second individual win in as many meets, running a time of 20:21.1. Cherotich’s time in the 6K event was the third fastest time in Gamecock history. She was followed by fellow freshman Cate Conklin who finished 14th overall after crossing the line at 21:55.1, turning in the second fastest time of the day for the Gamecocks. Conklin’s time also ranks 27th all-time in South Carolina history.

Anya Arroyo was the third fastest Carolina runner, clocking 22:00.1 to finish 16th overall. Emma Torbert finished 17th after running 22:00.8, while freshman Abigail White ran the fifth fastest time for the Gamecocks, turning in a time of 22:13.6 to finish 18th overall.

Furman, the host of the event and the 24th-ranked team in the NCAA, won the event after scoring 20 points. South Carolina finished second with 51, while holding off Charleston Southern who finished third with 78 points.

The Gamecocks will put their skills to the test in their next meet of the season, competing in the Live in Lou Classic on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Louisville, Ky.
