Trio of Goals Lead Gamecocks Past Queens

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team (5-1-2) earned the victory in its last non-conference match of the season, as the Gamecocks took down Queens University Charlotte (2-4-1) Tuesday night (Sept. 24) at Stone Stadium.

Carolina finished with 20 shots and nine shots on goal, both their second highest totals of the season. The Royals finished with 13 shots and only one shot on goal. The Gamecocks also led 7-to-5 in corner kicks.

South Carolina took less than three minutes to find their first goal of the match, set up by a corner kick. Alejandro Velazquez-Lopez served the ball into the box, where Andrew Goldsworthy nearly put it home on a header. The ball bounced off the Queens goalkeeper and right to the foot of Camden Kowalski, who buried it home for his second goal of the season.

Four minutes later, Harrison Myring doubled Carolina’s early lead, converting off a turnover. The Royals attempted to clear the ball, but Velazquez-Lopez intercepted it and found Myring sprinting inside the box, and he easily slotted it home for his sixth of the season.

The Gamecocks wouldn’t see any action again until the 75th minute when Ethan Ballek sent one soaring past the goalie into the upper left corner off a direct kick just outside the 18-yard box for his sixth goal of the season.

With the 3-0 victory, the Gamecocks have now outscored the Royals 10-1 in their three meetings all-time.

South Carolina heads on the road for a Sun Belt Conference match to face Coastal Carolina Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m.
