No. 24 Gamecocks Head to Nashville

COLUMBIA, SC – No. 24 South Carolina women’s soccer (5-1-4, 2-1-0) hits the road for one game this week at Vanderbilt (5-2-4, 0-2-2) on Friday, Oct. 4. The match against the Commodores will be on SECN+ at 8 p.m. EST.

LAST TIME OUT

The Gamecocks dropped their first game this season 0-2 against No. 2 Arkansas on the road on Sunday (Sept. 29). Fifth-year forward Car Barry led the team with four shots, while freshman forward Katie Shea Collins and senior defender Emma Bucci each had one. Junior Christina Tsaousis and fifth-year Taylor Fox split time in goal. Fox had one save, and Tsaousis had four, bringing her to 33 career saves. South Carolina had two corners throughout the game but couldn’t find the back of the net. The Gamecocks held the Razorbacks to two goals, their second-lowest in a game so far this season.

SCOUTING THE COMMODORES

Vanderbilt has played three ranked opponents but hasn’t been able to come out on top against one. The Commodores tied their season-opener against No. 21 Georgetown 0-0 and tied No. 6 Auburn 2-2. Like the Gamecocks, Vanderbilt played No. 2 Arkansas at Razorback Field last week and lost 0-2. Graduate forward Rachel Deresky and sophomore forward Syndey Watts led the team with five goals each, and shots on goal, with 13 apiece. The Commodores have yet to win on the road, having tied each of their three away games. They also haven’t been able to come up with a conference win. Vanderbilt last played Tennessee on the road and tied 1-1. Watts scored to take the lead in the second half but Tennesee tied it up in the 83rd minute.

Friday’s game will be the 33rd matchup between the Gamecocks and the Commodores. Vanderbilt leads the all-time series 15-10-7, but South Carolina has won six of the last 10 games. The last time the two teams played was on Sept. 15, 2023, in Columbia. The Gamecocks took the win 3-1 with goals from Senior midfielder Megan Spiehs and fifth-year forward Corinna Zullo scored for the Gamecocks and Barry logged an assist. Sophomore midfielder Courtney Jones scored the Commodores’ goal.
